My 49 8N with front mount distributer starts easily but surges and backfires through the exhaust. I have converted it to 12 volts, installed new points, distributer cap, rotor button, condenser, 12 volt square coil, plugs, and plug wires, and rebuilt the carb. Compression is around 125 lbs on all cylinders.

We identified a leak at the exhaust manifold and just replaced the gaskets. However, nothing has changed. There's still a leak in the same place and the tractor only runs with the choke out.
